Oh, What a Night…

{He’s at it again… snooping through his wife’s email… ensuring Pot Pie’s sleeping on the couch, so as not to wake her… looking… looking… yes! Writer’s block is of no concern when other’s leave their vulnerable words at ‘copy and paste’ reach. Here, cc outperforms Frankie Valli with a rendition of ‘Oh, What a Night’ of her own!}

For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”  In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”  For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
1 Corinthians 11: 23-26

Falling under the shadow of Good Friday, and in the midst of a busy week, Maundy Thursday is easy to overlook.  My calendar doesn’t label it, and few churches celebrate even though it is probably the oldest of the Holy Week observances.

This day we commemorate the Last Supper.  The Lord Jesus was the host of this last Passover observance with his disciples. Traditionally the meal would begin with the youngest member of the participants asking the question, “Why is this night different from all other nights?”  I hope you will pause with me today and consider this very question.

We are invited to the Passover table where our souls will be fed! ~ cc

    Since I am playing catchup after my own church’s many Holy Week activities (including our Maundy Thursday Communion service) and the Easter holiday weekend, I want to say that our service and the partaking of the Lord’s Supper certainly did drive deep into my heart the concept of True Communion with Him and with my Christian brothers and sisters.

  3. I haven’t seen many blog about Maundy Thursday. Pretty much just you and me. Great thought, too. Thanks.

    Thanks, Mike, for reminding me of Maundy Thursday. Jesus’ washing the disciples’ feet certainly displayed Jesus’ servant-shepherd’s heart. I read on Lambert Dolphin’s website in one of his excellent articles something I still think about. He said, in so many words, that because so many Jews were in Jerusalem for Passover that sacrificing animals for everyone could not be accomplished in one day. According to Him they began sacrifices on Thursday so they could complete them before Friday. Don’t know that it’s exactly accurate, but it makes sense.
