America… one nation under God?

Our Pastor asks, “Do you remember 911? Do you recall the great ceremonies of prayer that took place; our pleading with God to intervene on our behalf?”

He concludes, “Isn’t it ironic, a nation that chooses to kick God out of every public institution… calls on Him for protection?”

Recently, it was pointed out that Israel could be described as a people who desperately wanted the protective hand of their God (here). They were forthright in declaring an allegiance to His provision. Unfortunately, that was the duration, for most,  of the relationship they expressed.

When it came to believing Him and obeying Him, there was much less interest.

Acknowledging that America is not Israel, as some have wrongly tried to suggest, can we still fairly correlate the manner by which God acts in regard to His expectations and requirements of all people?

Is America a Christian nation… or has the Church simply been blessed to see a portion of the body stationed in this great land? If the latter is true, are we being the influence God has called His people to be, or are we imitating biblical Israel… consumed by our self-gratified lives while adorned with a false sense of His national security?

(An interesting point is made by Loopy on her blog here relating to the direction things appear to be going.)

(Carley, at Obsecrations, gives us a picture of a life focused only on self-gratification.)

Great post. Are we a Christian nation? Depends on how we define Christian now. It seems a lot of people make it up as they go along.

  2. Neither the US nor Australia – not any other nation – is a Christian nation, and I fear we are getting further and further away from any chance of being called such.

Australia was once called “The Great South Land of the Holy Spirit” and I pray for an awakening here that would show some indication of truth.

Wherever we live, we are called to be lights in a world of darkness and it is our responsibility to show His Light at every opportunity.

I suspect those who believe in the one and only true God bought the lie that spearation of church and state = christianity stays out of the governement when when in reality it is the other way around. This would explain why many professed Christians remain quiet in political issues. As granbee reminds us, Christians are to be salt; a flavoring and preservative but also a softener to the hardened hearts of this world.
    Keep the Faith!

“Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters…multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city…and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.” Jeremiah 29:5-7. We may debate if this is a “Christian nation”, but what does it matter? We are called to bring Christian truth to whatever nation the Lord has placed us in. I am a proud citizen of the USA, I am an even prouder citizen of heaven. All the way to heaven is heaven!

M and T, we are to be the salt of the earth here in the U.S. A., I believe. I very much honor the principle of separation of church and state, for it truly allows we Christians to be acting completely out of free will and through the power of His Grace!

You are one blessed with much wisdom, my dear friend. The truth you speak is what made this nation great… a people free to choose. Unfortunately, we forgot to include wisdom in our choosing. Wisdom is the ability to apply the Word of God… forgotten in America. While you truly still see the benefits of being able to wisely choose, most of our nation has been blinded by self-serving notions of ‘how much better can it be!’

Materialism owns this land. Our world will suffer at the hands of our greed. Children will die of starvation. People will die of preventable diseases. Worst of all, the gospel will not be heard. Why? So we can enjoy our I pads.So we can devour our rib-eyes. So we can have 200 TV channels. So we can dress like the Queen of England. (I could go on forever)

The world doesn’t care what we have to tell them… if it is not accompanied by what we can show them. Jesus loved us enough to give everything! How much are we willing to give to show His love to them? God bless you good friend!

Part of the body is here, but the US a Christian nation? Not any longer I don’t think. Many say they believe in God, but they believe in the god they want to believe in…not the God who is.

    Great article Mike, thanks.
    Blessings
